WHITE PAPER

Revamp hydrocrackers with latest-generation reactor internals

ADNOC - 3 Technologists & Process Engineers

The Diagnosis

Aged hydrocrackers experience performance constraints such as:

  • Difficulty handling heavy feeds that require more active catalysts
  • Curtailed catalyst cycle length and potential safety concerns, due to differentials in pressure and radial temperature
  • Limitations in production flexibility

The Discovery

Replacing the reactors are not considered viable at facilities like BP-Husky Toledo. Instead, they partnered with Shell Catalysts & Technologies to revamp reactors with latest-generation internals and achieved:

  • Increased cycle length and safety
  • Increased catalyst life and utilisation
  • Improved product flexibility to shift from vapours to liquids

The project took 10 months and the unit started up successfully on time and within budget.
