Aromatics Complex Catalysts

As a result of extensive research and development, Shell Catalysts & Technologies has developed a range of aromatics complex catalysts that feature engineered zeolites and novel metal functions. These features result in very high selectivity, providing minimal ring loss and reducing hydrogen consumption.

Three of our complex aromatics catalysts include:

ATA‑21Next & ATA‑41 trans‑alklation catalysts

Shell_1 1ATA-21Next and ATA-41 catalysts are used in aromatics complexes. The incorporation of a trans-alkylation unit into an aromatics complex can more than double the yield of paraxylene from naphtha feedstock.

ATA-21Next and ATA-41 provide:

  • high conversion (high benzene and xylene selectivity);
  • low operating temperatures (saving energy);
  • low by-product formation;
  • high benzene purity that meets today’s industry standards; and
  • catalyst stability and longer cycles.

OparisNext

Shell_1 1-1

OparisNext is a robust catalyst system offering standout ethylbenzene (EB) conversion rates. The use of high selectivity in this catalysts system ensures fewer side reactions that lead to ring loss and gas make.

Discover how OparisNext offers:

  • accelerated rate of EB conversion;
  • excellent PX approach to equilibrium (PX-ATE);
  • low C8 aromatic ring loss;
  • long cycle life; and
  • low gas make at high space velocity.

The Oparis series of catalysts have been loaded in 26 units and never had a failure on start-up or in operation.

Zataris-21

Shell_1 1-2Aromatics plant operators can enhance activity and selectivity when compared with industry-standard EBD catalysts through the use of ZATARIS‑21, Shell Catalysts & Technologies’ latest generation XI‑EBD catalyst.

Depending on the feed, operating conditions, product requirements and profit considerations, the ratio of each catalyst per bed can be tailored to provide greater feed flexibility.

In comparison with industry-standard EBD catalysts, ZATARIS‑21 offers standout performance in terms of activity, selectivity and ring retention.

Results include:

  • lower operating temperatures;
  • reduced CO₂ emissions;
  • longer cycles;
  • lower xylene losses; and
  • lower aromatic ring losses.
