The Diagnosis

In order to capitalize on higher-margin fuels and increase market share, Grupa LOTOS identified a strategic opportunity to operationalize a new generation of DAO hydrocracking technology. 

The Discovery

Partnering with Shell Catalysts & Technologies, Grupa LOTOS created a comprehensive solution that involved two key process units for the residue upgrading complex:

• DAO hydrocracker: processes VGO and DAO and yields finished products straight off the unit
• Advanced solvent deasphalter (SDA) unit: takes in vacuum residue and produces DAO that is sent directly to the hydrocracker

In addition, the project also helped dispel the misconception that hydrocracking of DAO means low reliability.
