Decreasing gas bubble size exponentially increases the surface area for contaminant transfer, but smaller bubbles are more easily entrained.
The flow rates of today's trays and structured packings are constrained if you continue to increase gas flow or decrease bubble size, liquid becomes entrained, causing operational problems. To increase capacity, you can increase column diameter, but at a cost.
But what if we turned the problem around, instead of bubbles in a liquid? We asked whether we could atomize and introduce liquid droplets into a high velocity gas stream and then separate the phases. We drew on our extensive expertise in atomizing liquid feeds and cyclone separation. Our team realized that we could atomize and train and separate the liquid in multiple enclosed contacting boxes.
The process has been demonstrated scaled up and is now being applied in commercial units. Shell Turbo Technologies can potentially double the gas flow rate in existing columns and approximately halve new column capex in our first commercial operation.
