Renewable Energy Directive (RED II)

The Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) sets out sustainability goals and greenhouse gas emission criteria for countries in the European Union (EU). Agreed upon by EU institutions in June 2018, the target for overall energy consumption from renewable sources for the continent was increased to 32%. The legislation also establishes a transport sub-target where member states must require fuel producers and suppliers to supply a minimum of 14% of consumed transportation energy as renewable energy by 2030.

As the energy transition continues to take hold, producers will need to make strategic investments that align their business models more strongly with the complex and ever-changing legislative landscape. Shell Catalysts & Technologies can help organisations in their transformation towards lower-carbon fuel production. Our energy transition portfolio includes biofuels, blue hydrogen and carbon capture technology to help refiners, petrochemical manufacturers and industrial clusters meet the demands of the energy transition. The Shell Renewable Refining Process specifically can enable the production of low-carbon fuels, like sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), by revamping existing hydrotreaters at a significantly lower capex than installing a grassroots unit.
