Renewable diesel fuel is made from biomass and is used in diesel-powered motor vehicles. Due to its chemical similarities with petroleum diesel, it can be used in existing engines and infrastructure and has immediate, short-term applicability.
Renewable fuel standards, increasing biofuels quotas, the E.U.’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) and other cap-and-trade systems all point to changing market dynamics that incentivise investments in renewable energy. The Shell Renewable Refining Process is one way for energy producers to strategically invest in their transition to becoming a lower-carbon energy producer. Carbon capture modules can be added to the equipment stack to capture carbon emissions associated with the process as well.
